Rent Increases Across the UK in the Year to March 2025
The Office For National Statistics has released the April update for rental prices across the UK in the 12 months up to April 2025.
Here are the top takeaways:
The average UK monthly private rent increased by 7.7% to £1,332, in the 12 months to March 2025.
Breaking that down by area, the average rent in England was £1,386 (7.8% increase), £792 (8.9% increase) in Wales, and £1,001 (5.7%) in Scotland in the 12 months to March 2025.
Northern Ireland saw the average rent increase to £838 (8.2% increase) in the 12 months to January 2025.
There are some differences in how this data compares from region to region, with England and Wales data being sourced from existing and advertised lets, whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland being based on new lets being advertised.
Renters' Rights and Rent Increases
The upcoming Renters’ Rights Bill has one specific proposed change in relation to rent increases, which is that once the new bill becomes law, landlords will only be able to apply rent increases once a year.
